Visual Arts
This quarter in VA we focused on different art principles. Each art principle had individual practices, and one of the products that I'm the proudest of is our lessons on the art principle "texture". The art principle texture is the ability to imply the visual feeling of something that if seen is rough but if touched is indeed flat. There are many different types of texture, but the focus of this quarter is Actual Rough Texture and Visual Rough Texture. Previously to learning those two, it turns out that we did an exercise of Visual Rough Texture, which is an artwork that shows texture that is individually visual, but when seen creates the feeling of rough texture. For this activity, I got a 10 (out of 10) for Criterion B. The assignment was to draw an object that does not only show the shape of the object but also the texture and the form. The image had to be as realistic as possible, and the realism had to be achieved through texture.
What I think I did well in the assignment is being able to achieve the realism. I have also been able to achieve the concept of Visual Rough Texture, which is imply visually the texture of an object. The object that I choose to draw was a small platypus doll scaled up so that I would be able to show more detail in the texture. The textures that were shown by the platypus doll was the texture of fur, leather, felt, and fabric. Each texture could be identified in my picture. The strengths that I think think my artwork shows is being able to maintain each element. I was able to show the reflect lights, and there is a smooth transition between different tones in the picture. The eyes also reflect light, which creates the visual texture of something glass/plastic that's hard and round. The stitching on the beak looks realistic, and the leather has roughness to let people identify it as leather. The fur is also small and repetitive, which is also the characteristics of fur. The felt looks fuzzy and soft, which is what I was aiming for. The rough cross hatching on the label creates the sense of fabric, hence it's able to be differentiated from the other textures in the artwork. The image also looks realistic, which is what to be achieved through textures. The weaknesses come from several of the blank spots in which transitions from one type of texture to another results in a thin white gap between the textures. The mid-tone is also too light, so the form isn't as clear as it could've been. The shadows also need to be more distinctive so that the form of the object and the source of light is clearer.
The IB Learner profile I showed in Art is communication, although the form of communication is visual rather then oral. Through art, I was able to communicate the physical look of and object, as well as the tiny details that contribute to what makes the object look like what it is now. Through this artwork, I was able to communicate the physical visual of a platypus doll, using the different techniques learned in the past to illustrate the platypus. Through this artwork, I was also able to communicate through illustration my abilities in sketching realistic objects, and people who see it can know the extent of my ability in sketching and purposefully using textures to convey Visual Textures. Visual textures are illusions of texture, the illusions of different texture in which were successfully communicated through the artwork.
