Journal #16 – Testing the Product
14 January 2016. Testing the product Things that I learn, success, struggle Throughout the past weeks, I have personally approached members of my target audience and asked them to answer the survey I sent them, equipped with pre-product answers, a digital edition of the product, and post-product answers. Creating questions that could measure the members were difficult, as the survey was qualitative, not quantitative. However, urging the members to answer the survey was the most difficult part, and some approached the survey enthusiastically and others did not. Because of that, |
I had to remind people and constantly ask new people to answer the survey, as some of the people that had agreed to did not. However, I managed to gather enough responses for an accurate judgement of the success of my product. Turning the quantitative data qualitative, however, was also a challenge. Besides the fact that I had to find key phrases within each answer to identify it with a level of achievement, there were some answers that were difficult to decide into a category, and needed extra time to read and level out. Because of that, the process of analyzing the survey results was also difficult, and was done with extensive care. There were no available metrics but for two questions, so I had to look into results from 12 different worded answers to determine the success or failure of a design specification.
Inspiration from the experience or information related to my personal project
In the future, I should do all I can to make a survey as simple as it can be, because audiences appreciate short surveys over long surveys. It will also do me well if the survey consists of answers that can easily be measured, quantitative, to ease the process of analyzing data. However, a personal approach proved to be more effective than my peers who mass emailed their surveys, because the member of the target audience is more prone to be morally inclined to fill out the survey than those with no ties.
Things that I should do differently or change
My surveys should try to be as quantitative as possible, so that participants will not be burdened to fill it out.
Things that I should research/do more
If possible, I should continue gathering more survey answers and updating my analysis based on whether or not those surveys support the trends I have seen from the answers or have reasoning to go against it. I should also make sure my analysis is thorough and accurate, so that the reasoning behind whether or not my design specifications are met are accurate to the results.

Creating the product
Things that I learn, success, struggle
After establishing a premise, a plot, and characters, I began working on my product. This was a tedious process of sketching, inking, and colouring done over the course of three weeks. Because I'm familiar with drawing but unfamiliar with drawing comics, the experience was interesting because it was both challenging and stress relieving for me to draw. However, after half the pages were drawn, the process became more tiring and more of a burden. In contrast, the inking process was done extremely quickly, because all I needed to do was follow the previously drawn lines, and tracing has always been something that's come easy to me. Because of that, the time consumed by sketching was successfully aided by the time saved in inking. The colouring was altogether a different experience, because although I'm familiar with watercolours, the way I regularly used them was time consuming. Unlike the previous two processes which used one tool and an eraser, this process required regular changing of colours, palettes, brushes, all of which had to be regularly cleaned and washed for use. Because of that, the process was time consuming, and I sorted out an industrial system where I laid all the pages onto the ground and coloured one colour at a time, which was faster for the process as I didn't have to wait for colours to dry on different pages to continue working. Granted, I missed some colours and had to go back and correct them after the process, but the speed creation of the product became increasingly quick as I changed from my regular approach to the method.
Inspiration from the experience or information related to my personal project
From the creating process, I have learned how much a small difference can make in efficiency. Although the process was long, tedious, tiring, and became terribly burdensome towards the end, if I just approach the challenge and do it without over-thinking the consequences or the burden that comes with it, I can solve the challenge. Often, I become afraid and tired to face challenges simply thinking of the challenge. Through this experience I learned that when facing challenges in the personal project, it's enough to simply face those challenges, because if I only think of them, they'll never be completed.
Things that I should do differently or change
In the future, I should think more of time effectiveness because it does effect the product and slight alterations can greatly advantage or disadvantage the product. I should not be obstinate in facing challenges the way I have always faced them, but open to collaborate different ideas and methods to make things with the same, if exceeding, quality but more time efficient.
Things that I should research/do more
I must collect the pages of the product and scan them each, setting the scanner to retain as closely to the original colour as possible. I must then digitally modify the colours so that they will be as close to the actual colouring as possible, so that the product doesn't loose its authenticity as a traditional work. I must also arrange the pages so that the boundaries are similar with each comic strip in the product, to provide consistency. I must also add page numbers to the different pages, to ease the printing process. Afterwards, I must bring my product to a printing company to be printed professionally, with high quality covers, paper, and laminating.

Journal #14 – Survey
30 October 2015. Sending out survey for "Words of Advice" to target audience, SPH community, of what they would advice for their younger selves Things that I learn, success, struggle After discussing with my supervisor, we decided that a good way to make the product more impactful and relevant is to have the audience’s personal experience illustrated in the survey in a manner that makes the situations unanimous and unspecific, but common so that its easily relatable. Through |
the survey, I learned what the target audience would say to their younger selves if given the chance. From their experiences, I identified key factors that were the base of those words of wisdom for their younger selves. It was interesting to see that the most common words of wisdom were related to never give up, be yourself, believe in yourself, be positive, think before you act, be thankful, and avoid disasters.
Inspiration from the experience or information related to my personal project
After learning the most common words of wisdom from teenagers, I’m determined to see ways I can use those positively denoted things to create negative outcomes, to show that even what is considered predictable has no permanent absolute outcome. That way, the product is relevant to the target audience, sympathizing with their personal experiences without a personal or intrusive approach. The product will therefore be more relatable for the target audience.
Things that I should do differently or change
-
Things that I should research/do more
I should plot the situations and setting in the comic that would include the concepts derived form the Words of Wisdom survey and evaluate with my supervisor.

Meeting with supervisor
Things that I learn, success, struggle
Two days before, I had confirmed that the two main players of my plot would be an elder sister and a younger brother. The day before, after thinking about the plot, I decided that the framework of the plot would be centered around words of advice that the elder sister would give the younger brother as a birthday present. These advices were at first difficult to think of, because I was thinking of common words and ways to turn them into faulty generalities to showcase attribution error. However, after the meeting today, my supervisor proposed that instead of conjuring words of advice on my own, I should ask the teenagers around me for what they think is an important word of advice. Also, after consider Piaget's stages of cognitive development, I decided that the main character should be ten-years-old and his elder sister fifteen. But, after considering this with my supervisor, we agreed that the boy should instead be 9 years old so that he would be a median in the concrete operational stage of development and his stereotyping would be more predictable.
Inspiration from the experience or information related to my personal project
While creating my personal project, I will be doing it relevant to the lives of teenagers in my community, and providing examples that everybody can relate to. Because of this, when constructing the situations in my personal project, I will make them as relatable as possible according to problems or situations I've seen around school, then adjusting them to fit the 9-year-old age of my character. I will also send a survey to the students on my school considered teenagers of words of advise they would share to their younger selves, to make the product more relevant.

Meeting with supervisor
Things that I learn, success, struggle
In this meeting, we constructed a basic structure of what the product was actually going to be about. I proposed my idea of a two-way comic, but after reconsidering, we agreed that it may loose readers. So, instead, we focused to product as a story that presents the attributional theories in a forward-plot so not to loose the readers. In this meeting, I was successful in redirecting my thoughts on the purpose on my book and refocus the product itself to being purpose-centric rather than something I think would be cool but potentially defeats the purpose.
Inspiration from the experience or information related to my personal project
While creating the plot, I should make the concept of attribution as forward as possible whilst still being shrouded in a sense of realism that doesn't make readers feel like information is being spoon-fed to them.
Things that I should do differently or change
Make sure that I must be focused on the purpose of the novel.

Journal #11 – Clarifications on Criteria B
29 September 2015.
Meeting with supervisor
Things that I learn, success, struggle
I struggled in knowing what exactly was necessary in Criteria B, so prior to this meeting, I was very lost. After the meeting, I learned that the criteria B was basically a discussion on my plan and constructing a criteria based on my prior research regarding the subject. Because I know what I have to do, I am assured that I can finish the Criteria on time.
Inspiration from the experience or information related to my personal project
The criteria B helps me define clear goals for my product in its contextual and physical nature, all of which support the achievement of my personal goal. Because I know what's goes inside my Criteria B, I know how I will keep on track with my personal timetable so I am sure that I will finish my project on time. I also know the different standards to fulfill to reach my goal, so when I work towards and by those criterions, I have the comfort of knowing my personal project can be successful.
Things that I should do differently or change
I should put more focus in the plotting and characterization of my story, so that it will fit the goal, instead of just the definitions of the goal.
Things that I should research/do more
Plotting of story and planning of character aptitudes.

Journal #10 – Summarizing Color Survey
18 September 2015.
Summarizing information from a color survey I did in 2014, which separated the different answers into the categories of state, specifics, orobjects (elaborated in document "Color Survey")
Things that I learn, success, struggle
Although it took quite a long time to manage the data, the results taught me that color is a very powerful tool to imply information and emotion, evoking thoughts and ideas.
Inspiration from the experience or information related to my personal project
In my product, instead of distributing emotions through words, I should use colors to increase the emotional factor to make readers feel more involved or moved by the story.

- What do you think is the most important thing in illustration?
I think it's the connection that you're establishing with your viewer. The artist can make this connection through emotions, relatable subjects of daily life or just sheer beauty (we as human beings love to look at beautiful things just because so why not?). - Why do you illustrate?
Because I love to create this kind of connection mentioned above. - Do you believe that illustration has power?
Of course! Artists can create emotion and entire worlds out of colors and shapes. That's very powerful, I think. :) - What's something you'd like to recommend for people who're looking into illustration?
Keep making good art and sharing it! That's the only way to improve and get known :)
with Aditya Pratama
- What do you think is the most important thing in illustration?
Hal yang paling penting dalam membuat ilustrasi menurut saya adalah ilustrasi tersebut bisa mengkomunikasikan pesan dengan baik dan menarik (The most important thing in illustration according to me is that the illustration can communicate messages well and interestingly). - Why do you illustrate?
Tujuan saya membuat ilustrasi awalnya karena senang menggambar, tapi sekarang menjadi sumber penghasilan saya (At first it was because I enjoyed drawing, but now it has become my source of income) - Do you believe that illustration has power?
Tergantung, tidak semua pesan cocok menggunakan ilustrasi sebagai media untuk menyampaikan pesan...untuk beberapa "hal" foto bisa jadi media yang lebih cocok (Depends, not all messages are appropriate to deliver through illustration... for some "things" photographs can become a more appropriate media) - What's something you'd like to recommend for people who're looking into illustration?
Terus berlatih! (Keep practicing!)

Journal #6 – Comics
20th June, 2015 – 25th June, 2015.
In a burst of reminisce, I remembered that my initial interest in science and math came from a series of comics that I owned. As a child, those comics were the source of a lot of my knowledge from those subjects. Looking back at the books, I discovered that even though I read those comics at a young age, I still remember a lot about them; not specifically names and faces of the characters, but the content of what they were explaining. I also recalled political and propaganda comic strips, which are both very powerful. I also remembered the leisure comic, Calvin and Hobbes, and how that can be equally entertaining and philosophical. I was reminded of the power of comics, and I decided that I wanted to make a comic that described Attribution.
Things that I learn, success, struggle
I learned that a comic is a powerful media. After further research, I also learned the benefits of comics. I also made a list of specific comics that I wanted to study before proceeding in making my final outcome, which includes a comic I really like, Calvin & Hobbes, a very popular comic, Peanuts, a series of short stories I enjoy reading that come with lovely illustrations, Peter Rabbit, and a Japanese mangaka who’s organic artistry is something I really admire, Hayao Miyazaki.
Inspiration from the experience or information related to my personal project
I’m inspired to make a comic for my final product.
Things that I should do differently or change
I shouldn’t think of things last minute. Also, instead of forcing myself to think of a final product, I should’ve taken a look of the things around me that helped me learn then innovate it into a final product, like I did when I was leisurely thinking about comics.
Things that I should research/do more
I should do an art analysis on the artistry of comics, as well as color choices and swatches.

Journal #5 – Library Visit
31st July, 2015
I visited Universitas Indonesia (UI, or University of Indonesia) to visit their Library for research regarding the fundamental error of Attribution and discover more about the topic.
Things that I learn, success, struggle
I learned a lot about the fundamental error of attribution, and the fact that it's a bias tendency that is also culturally based. I learned that Eastern people have a tendency to bias towards an external attribution, while Western people bias towards an internal attribution. This is because of the culture difference between the two places, which taught me that nurture is one way people develop natural instincts.
Inspiration from the experience or information related to my personal project
I learned about the fundamental attribution error, and it reminded me once again that when making my final product, I need to keep in mind that culture plays a role in attribution, too.
Things that I should do differently or change
I should spend more time in the Library to look for more books. When I was there, there were some more books I wanted to read but did not have the time to, while other books I couldn’t find even when they were in the Library catalogue. Because I didn’t have time, I also took pictures of each page, which resulted in some blurry-ish words that made reading a little difficult. I should take more time in the future.
Things that I should research/do more
I should decide on the visual media.

Because of that, I’m also inspired to use colour psychology as part of my final product, because I know that the choice of colours have a strong affects on the emotions evoked while looking at something visual. Through a smart choice of colours, my product will be much more attractive and emotionally driven in positive ways.
Things that I should do differently or change
I should follow up information faster, to ease the process of writing the report.
Things that I should research/do more
The fundamental errors of attribution, and choose a visual medium for my final product + research more on color psychology.

Journal #3 – Guest Lecture & Interview
20th July, 2015
Mamahit, Aileen P. Personal Interveiw. 20 July 2015.
Nadia: According to you, is it important for people to understand what it [attribution] is?
Mamahit: Yes, I think so, because when we understand the concept of attribution we understand the underline meanings of our actions and why we do what we do and how we do it because a lot of us, a lot of people, would go through the motions of doing things without understanding why they do it, what cause them to do it, the cause of their behavior.
Nadia: Do you think that attribution is a relatively difficult or easy concept to grasp?
Mamahit: It can be easy, it can be difficult, but, I think it has to do with translating it to a layman’s term what is it, so that everybody can understand.
Nadia: According to you – em – a lot of psychology journals are written – eh – do you think it’s better to take that concept [attribution] and if you want to present it to the general public to keep it in written form or have it visually explored?
Mamahit: People learn more when they see something, when it’s visual, so I think it’s important also to see something what attribution is like.
Things that I learn, success, struggle
I learned that its important to understand what Attribution is, because as humans we should be able to make sense of the reasons behind why or how we do things and why or how others do things, because such information will make us more cautious of our actions and will help us understand humans (as social creatures) more. I also learned that when teaching others, visual media is a powerful thing, which is why it’s often used as a tool in clinical psychology.
Inspiration from the experience or information related to my personal project
From the experience, I was inspired to create a final product of visual quality, as images are extremely helpful when trying to describe concepts. Images are powerful tools, and because art is a subject area that I’m committed to, I think it’ll be good if I create a visual-product that can explain Attribution in layman’s terms (I also learned what layman means).
Things that I should do differently or change
Next time, I should allow myself some time to prepare questions for the interview instead of doing spontaneously, because it’ll give myself a clearer direction during the interview so the interview will be more effective.
Things that I should research/do more
I should decide a visual media that I want as my final product, and research more about it. I should also look into the emotional aspects of Attribution, and the fundamental error of Attribution.

Journal #2 – Reading Journal from Malle
1st July, 2015 – 4th July, 2015.
Things that I learn, success, struggle
This was very challenging for me. It was my first time reading a psychology report, so I didn’t quite understand the writing style of the report yet. It was difficult to grasp the extensive vocabulary used, and draw my own simplified conclusions from the information, as I was afraid of doing so wrongly. However, from this, I learned about the development of Attribution, and what each step in the development process contributed to the concept that stands today. Throughout the reading process, I highlight key phrases and added my own personal notes, which will be helpful when looking back at the document. I also learned that the fundamental error of attribution is also referred to as an attribution asymmetry, which is a situation where the attribution made does not match the facts.
Inspiration from the experience or information related to my personal project
This information helped me learn more about Attribution. It also helped me see some flaws throughout the process of Attribution history, and showed me the attempts on fixing them.
Things that I should do differently or change
Next time, instead of forcing myself to reread the same sentence over and over until I understand it, which makes the difficult sentences even more beguiling, I should focus on reading the entire sections like I did towards the end, which helped with understanding because it gave me a bigger picture.
Things that I should research/do more
I should research more about the fundamental errors in attribution, and regarding the emotional affects of attribution.

Journal #1 – Basics
20th June, 2015 – 25th June, 2015. Things that I learn, success, struggle I tried understanding the universally accepted concepts of Attribution. This process was difficult at first because I was unfamiliar with the terms used in the explanations, as psychology terminology is very new for me. Besides that, there was also a lot of information to digest, so it took me some time. I resorted into outlining the information to my best understanding, then drawing my own simplified versions of the conclusion. That helped me understand the basics of the concepts, which was extremely helpful for my future research. |

Inspiration from the experience or information related to my personal project
The information I discovered was my first step towards my personal project, giving me basic knowledge on Attribution. The various concepts also helped me grow my interest towards Attribution, because although I understood the basics, there were still a lot of things that I wanted to discover.
Things that I should do differently or change
I shouldn’t put-off work as I did with outlining the information. If I hadn’t procrastinated, I would’ve been more productive.
Things that I should research/do more
I should deepen my research regarding the different aspects, as well as try to look at the history of Attribution instead of just the end product. I should also start thinking about what I want my final product to become.
