Reflection
In this quarter of Design Technology, the main focus creating a t-shirt that represents 3 things from your assigned province. In this assignment, I was assigned West Sumatra. I designed a t-shirt (that was made using a mixture of batik and tie-dye) that would represent 3 things from my province, as well as invited people to visit my province. Some things that I think I did well during this project is my time-management skill, so that I didn't have to rush through the process and everything came out neatly. I'm also delighted with the fact that I was able to execute the t-shirt with a mixture of both batik & tie-dye skills, without the aid of other types of techniques. Through this shirt, I also managed to successfully reach all the Design Specifications, which I think is because of the planning that I did before I executed the creating of this t-shirt. Some things that I would like to improve is the execution it-self, I could've done things neater and I could've improved the form of the objects. Also, before the execution process I should've tested the colors so that it would've turned out more planned. By testing the colors, I would have a clearer imagination of what the final product would be. In doing the tie-dye, I also should've repeated the process several times to get the intended result. In Design Technology, I showed the IB Learner Profile Communicators because I managed to communicate what thought would be three significant factors of my province to the students (intended target audience) through a shirt. Through the shirt, I also managed to communicate what I have learned throughout the quarter, a long as my hopes for West Sumatra. The final product of the shirt and the assessments can be seen at the bottom of this page.

1. What did I do? Today I drew the design on my piece of fabric and finished batiking the whole outside of the shirt. I started with illustrating the design on the shirt, first. After that, I batiked using a medium sized canting. 2. What can I improve? Next time I should be able to work faster so that I will be able to finish both sides of the batiking so that I will be ahead of schedule. I should also batik neater and the next time I batik I will improvise to make several of the drips look decorative. 3. Am I on schedule? Yes, I am on schedule. My schedule for today was to transfer the design and do some of the batik. In the next meeting I will have to finish the batiking.

1. What has been good? Today I was able to finish my batik. I was able to finish both sides of the batik. I think that my batik is attractive t teenagers, also that the design is attractive enough (the batiking). The batik is original and the back of it is inspirational. The design, although meaningful, is still simple and the design is organized and almost complete based on my design* 2. What to improve? *Next time I need to follow my design more and make no mistakes in my design. This time, I forgot to add the letter "G" to the word "Minangkabau." I improved this mistake by adding the G like a raindrop with an orangutan hanging on it. I hope that it will make my fabric more inspirational too, because it adds another animal to the shirt, and the fact that I did it neatly makes it look organized and planned. 3. Did you follow your plan? What's next? Based on my Gantt Chart, the next thing that I am supposed to do it paint the batik. This will contribute to the attractiveness of my fabric and add the colors. |

1. What has been good? Today I was able to plan on how to make my mistakes look more attractive and organized. I have decided to make the word "Minangkabau" all the same colors so that it still appears and is interpreted as the same word instead of a mistake. 2. What to improve? Next time, I would like to improve my awareness while batiking so that even if I made a mistake on my design I wouldn't make the same mistake on my batiking process. 3. Did you follow your plan? Yes I followed my plan. Since an extra day is added, I will move all my plans one day forward (excluding Saturday). Next I will paint the batik

1. What has been good? What I did well today was my ability to paint all the areas that need to be painted in one period. I was able to manage my time properly and I was able to use the tools provided by the school well. The painting was also according to my plan, with a few adjustments that were use to add more color and to fill in blank spots. I also improvised well depending on how well the painting went 2. What to improve? What I need to improve next times is my neatness in painting and filling in the colors so that the colors don't get mixed and don't drip. I also need to batik thicker so that the wax doesn't crack, because if it does it allows part of the die to spread through the batik, which makes me have to improvise the painting. 3. Did you follow your plan? I followed my plan that is all moved a day forward because of the delay on Monday. Next I will cover the painted areas with wax so that the colors won't mix once I tie-dye. |

1. What has been good? What I did good today was being able to cover my whole batik with wax. I did this in less then two periods, and was able to apply a thick coat of wax so that in the net step dye wouldn't seep trough the wax accidentally and affect the color of what I have made. After that, I was also able to help my friend so I think that today was an efficient day. 2. What to improve? Next time, I have to improve my neatness so that the wax doesn't drip. I should also be more careful with my hands and clothes so that I don't drop any wax on them. 3. What to do next? Today I followed my plan and was also able to help one of my classmates with their shirt because I finished early. Next, I need to tie-dye my t-shirt. I will tie-die using wantek. |
November 20, 2013.
1. What has been good? Today I was able to finish my tie-dying in less then one period. I changed my method of dying into one that is more efficient; filling an empty ketchup bottle with a little wantek powder and mixing it with hot water and salt, then squirting the dye to the batik through the opening on the top. I was able to do this neatly. I also had to improvise the location of the spiral, because the wax was to stiff to twirl in the center. After finishing, the tie-dye didn't turn out like a spiral, but it still looked nice. During this process I was helped by Rachel and Rara. 2. What to improve? The next time I must remember not to wax the batik too thickly, so that the color is still protected but the fabric is still flexible. Next time I should also stick more to my plan so that the result can be predicted simply. 3. What to do next? Today (although my tie-dye failed) I followed my plan. If tehre is time I will make an effort to tie-dye again. Next, I should wait for my piece of fabric to dry, then boil it to rid it of all the wax. (It turns out that Ibu Lisa did this for me) The result of the first tie-dye. As you can see, the colors are very pale and you can't see the radia |

1. What has been good? Today I was able to improve my tie-dye, which was previously wrong because the color mixed together into a green-yellow state. The color that I used this time was blue, so that it would pop and so that the color won't mix in again and become pale. The results were well, and I finished creating my fabric today. 2. What to improve? Last time I think that the mistake I did was adding too little salt, this time I added more which I think is an improvement. Next time I should also make the colors bolder during the first step so that I won't have to do the tie-die twice again. 3. What to do next? Today I followed my plan, the tie-dye was additional and wasn't part of the original plan but because it matched the schedule it could be executed. Next I should create my feedback form and interview people on what they think about my product based on the design specification and do a cross-check on my-self, too. |
The result of the second application of tie-dye (not from design but an improvisation to add a touch of tie-dye) |
Final Product: Compare and Contrast
The final product is in some ways similar and in someways extremely different from the design. Overall, there are many things that I would like to improve.
Criterias
Criteria D
This is my self evaluation, this is how well I think I did during this activity. I think that I deserve a four because although my evaluation meets the task specific clarifications for a 6, the final product it-self deserves a five.
