Cultural Heritage and Life - Essay on Tibet
Guiding Question: How do we get to know a culture?
In this quarter I learned about how exposing our-selves to a culture can open our perspective in our world and learn from other cultures. Throughout this quarter the focus of our class was on different cultures from all around the world. One of the major projects we had for this quarter was the creating an essay on a country/province of our choice. The province I chose was Tibet, originally because I thought that it would be interesting to learn about mountaineers. I also learned how to write better, how to create focused paragraphs on different topics and how to state facts clearly. My essay discussed the effects of Modernization in China, and concluded with a paragraph on why modernization happens. Then, based on the essay, we had a presentation on our main points. The presentation was helped by a slideshow that can be seen below. The presentation went well, and through it I was able to share with my peers the points that I wanted to communicate. Through the presentation I learned a little bit about how to get over my nerves, as I did towards the end. I also learned to talk a little bit slower then I normally do so that my speech isn't misinterpreted.
What I did well in this quarter is controlling my ability to write and improving my language to produce an essay that I think is worthy of my age. In my presentation I regret my nervousness that lead me to saying "um" at the beginning, but I like the fact that I was able to communicate my points to the public and that the audience understood what I was trying to say. I would improve my self-confidence so that in the future I do not stutter or make up my sentences as I go. I would also like to have practiced more so that I can have the full confidence in my speech. The IB Learner profile that I showed through this is inquirer, because I enjoy inquiring about a culture that I knew very little about at first. I was able to deepen my understanding of Tibet, and broaden my perspective on the true effects of modernization.

Unit Reflection
What did you think about the unit?
I think that this was a great unit to start up the school year. It was a great introduction to what Ms. Terri expected from us and how we can improve in her class. I thoroughly enjoyed the unit because I was able to delve deeper into the analysis of different cultures (besides my own) and I was able to learn little tips and tricks that would improve my writing.
What would you change?
What I would change is the time that was the discussion period after the speech. I would lengthen the constructive criticism time, and I would like to have each point discussed in a way that would highlight the areas of improvement that we needed. Thorough criticism would help us improve our speaking more.

Suggestions
- Have criticism from every classmate
- Discuss each point of criticism in detailed
- Lengthen the Speech time by one minute, so more points can be communicated in the length of time and a more thorough conclusion can be made
